AMPLIFY Clearwater Board of Directors Unanimously Approves Resolution Against “Minimum Wage Initiative”
At the meeting of the Board of Directors of AMPLIFY Clearwater on August 25, 2020, the AMPLIFY Clearwater Board of Directors took a position against Amendment 2: Raising Florida’s Minimum Wage.
AMPLIFY Clearwater supports the payment of a livable wage. However, we do not believe that the Florida Constitution is the place for a minimum wage law. Our members would support a minimum wage increase be addressed at the national level allowing all states to play on a level field. We believe this amendment, while well intended, will have adverse consequences including a lack of competitiveness, potential layoffs, significant burden to all business, especially small businesses and those in the tourism industry. We also believe this law could have the unintended consequence of possible loss of social safety nets for some workers who might be worse off due to the loss of public assistance and benefits that they are currently eligible for and receive. Addressing a minimum wage increase as a Constitutional Amendment, would also make it difficult for employers to remain flexible during recessions and economic slowdown periods.
